FERROCEMENT SHELL

Ferrocement can’t strictly be classified as a sustainable material, but it is highly efficient and cost-effective. The desired form for any shell is built from a multi-layered construction of chicken mesh wire, reinforced with steel wires or steel bars based on the span. In this project, a combination of tor steel 10mm rods and chicken mesh wire was engaged to achieve the final desired form.

An appropriate mixture of cement, sand and water was spread out evenly over the framework. During hardening, the ferrocement is kept moist, to ensure the cement is able to set and harden. The final thickness of ferrocement shell achieved here is 2cms. Like other applications of cement, a considerable amount of time is necessary for the material to fully cure and reach its final strength and can take upto a month before it is ready for use.
